Danish Kaneria arrested for spot fixing

London: Pakistani spinner Danish Kaneria (29), who plays for Essex, along with fast bowler Mervyn Westfield (22), were arrested by Essex police in connection with the alleged spot-fixing in Essex's Pro40 match against Durham last September, Daily Telegraph reported.

Both the players were at the Brentwood police station on Friday to answer some questions. Both have been released on bail till September 15.

Neither of them have been charged yet and they can continue playing.

According to the report, even though Kaneria's performance in the match against Durham is not under scrutiny, he may have introduced Westfield, whose performance against Durham is under the scanner, to an illegal bookmaker.

Spot-fixing is the event in which a small event in the game is fixed, such as a wide or a dropped catch. This is thought to be favoured by India's illegal bookmakers to manipulate bets.
