A career in the music industry

A career in the music industry
About 10 years ago, I gave up a successful career in travel and finance to make music a full-time career choice.

At that time, most people around me thought that I was crazy to make a decision like that. However, that choice did pay off and today I’m happy to call myself a professional musician.

A career in the music industry today can be  rewarding both personally and financially however, only a few make it big. There is a lot in common between those who are successful and some aspects that stand out most are hard work, dedication, perseverance, staying true to what you do and the ability to look at the bigger picture. Be innovative and constantly update one’s skills. Practice hard and strive to always give of your best.

There are many career options available to aspiring musicians some of which include:

Teaching - Both private lessons or one could teach at schools and universities. There are a number of institutions and universities in New Zealand that need good teachers.

Session Musician - These are professional musicians who play for studio projects, jingles and  soundtracks. One of the pre-requisites for a good studio musician is the ability to read music, know one’s instrument well, and adapt one's playing style to the situation. Another huge factor is accuracy and the ability to perform and interact well with others.

Composers/ Arrangers - Arrangers write music for small groups or orchestra. They are usually trained musicians and are quite experienced.

Gigging musicians - These are working musicians and their forte is performing live on stage.  Gigging musicians may have to travel often. Touring has its rewards but it can get very stressful and tiring over a long period of time.

Other options - These include setting up and running a recording studio, studio recording engineers, music programmers, songwriting, managing and organising events, artiste managers, music directors and musical theatre.  With the advent of the internet there is an entire new stream of careers available in the electronic media.

I am happy to be a part of this industry. No two days are the same. It has its challenges just like any other job or career choice. However, this is one profession where one can take one’s hobby and passion and make it a career choice.
