Midday football event in Wellington Civic Square to celebrate Mandela Birth Centenary

A midday football event in Wellington Civic Square will be the key attraction among many other programmes lined up to celebrate the birth centenary of Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela on Wednesday, July 18.
The Wellington Interfaith Council and Wellington City Council are joining with the South African High Commission to celebrate the birth centenary of Nelson Mandela this year.
The United Nations had declared July 18, the birth date of the former South African President as "Nelson Mandela International Day" in recognition of his contribution to the values of freedom and world peace to the rest of the world.
Following the spirit of the Nelson Mandela International Day, the events planned throughout the day strive to reflect the values emulated so undeviatingly throughout Mr Mandela’s life.
The Nelson Mandela International Day Values are
• Be kind to other people
• Do things for your community
• Work hard at your education
• Have courage when things are tough
Wellington events itinerary
Morning Program - Work hard at your Education.
Join at the following public libraries: Lower Hutt; Porirua and Wellington Central.
Learn more about Mr Mandela. Bring your children to share in this wonderful occasion.
Midday Program - Do things for your community and be kind to other people.
Join at the Civic Square at 12 – 1 p.m. for a friendly soccer game hosted by Capital Football. Drop off, in the boxes provided an item of winter clothing for those in need. Find an opportunity to serve for 67 minutes in your neighbourhoods in honour of Nelson Mandela
Evening Program - Have courage when things are tough.
Join in celebrating the life of one who symbolises courage in the face of conflict and opposition with an interfaith event at Te Wharewakka from 5.30 – 7.00 p.m.
