Two Kiwi-Indians will lead NZ’s space challenge in France

Winners of ActInSpace NZ – a 24-hour-long hackathon – team Te Marama, led by team leader Mahima Seth (originally from Delhi, now living in Auckland) and Zeus Engineer (originally from Mumbai, now living in Christchurch), will travel to France on June 27, to pitch their start-up idea to an international panel of judges at the ActInSpace International Final at the Toulouse Space Show.

Ms Seth, who immigrated to New Zealand in 2004 with her family is a former avionics technician at the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and is now working at Rocket Lab. While Mr Engineer, who has also been in New Zealand for over 14 years, completed his engineering from the University of Auckland, and is now employed at the Crown research institute Callaghan Innovation.

In the winning endeavour, the two Kiwi-Indians were ably supported by their other team members - Ben Tairea and Maddy King from Wellington, and Jonah Belk from Dunedin.

In all, ActInSpace NZ had nine teams, with 42 participants, presenting a new space technology idea after 24 hours of furious coding, planning and pitching. Teams were asked to re-imagine existing space technology and data into new applications.

“And Te Marama won it with our start-up idea to reduce the amount of repairs that humans do in space by cost-effectively using VR to control repair robots remotely,” informed Mr Engineer. “It was a long grilling exercise, but all of us are very happy to have won it. It’s a huge honour to represent New Zealand at a world stage, and can’t wait for June 27.” The team flies to France on June 24.

Similar to events held in over 71 cities across 35 countries. ActInSpace NZ was organised by the Centre for Space Science Technology (CSST) in partnership with New Zealand Space Agency and ChristchurchNZ and support from the French Embassy in New Zealand.

What is ActInSpace?

This is how the organisation describes what they do in 71 cities across 35 countries, with 3356 competitors battling it out in 80 challenges.

“ActInSpace is an international innovation contest inspiring young women and men worldwide to meet challenges based on space technologies, data, patents and infrastructure to launch start-ups into all areas of our daily lives. Designed for students but open to everyone, the objective is to foster entrepreneurship, encourage start-up creation and promote the use of space technologies and space acquired data to change citizen’s lives, to boost employment and to protect our planet.

ActInSpace is a unique opportunity for participants worldwide to work on creating business perspectives for the challenges by the use of patents, technologies and satellite data made available by CNES, ESA, Airbus and all our partners to create start-ups. The challenges are based on high-level technologies, which nevertheless are easy to re-use because they have been selected due to their potential for commercial applications. The winners of the ActInSpace contest will be awarded with amazing prizes, with the grand prize being a Zero-G Airbus A310 parabolic flight. However, the most important is not just to win, but to reach solutions ready to launch start-up companies, thanks to experts supporting all participants and teams round-the-clock during the ActInSpace contest.”

Moreover, ActInSpace challenges are divided into three broader categories:

* Every Day Life Business: Get your business off the ground thanks to space technologies

* Space4.0: Become a NewSpace player and improve the space sector thanks to ‘earth technologies’

* Humanitarian: Find a way to put the Space Sector at the service of humanitarian causes
