Security guard fatal assault: Accused charged with manslaughter

A 17-year-old male has accused of fatally assaulting a security worker at Papakura Countdown has been charged with manslaughter, Counties Manukau Police revealed on a social media post.

On Wednesday, May 2, a young security worker at Countdown supermarket in Papakura was working when he spotted the 17-year-old for his suspicious behaviour.

As per reports when the security guard approached the teenager, he was punched in his head causing fatal injury. The assault was captured on the CCTV witnessed by the shoppers near the counter.

He said the injured security guard was taken to Middlemore Hospital but died early this morning (Thursday, May 3) from his injuries.

Police arrested the 17-year-old male, and he appeared at Papakura District Court today.

Counties Manukau South Area Commander Inspector Dave Glossop confirmed police were investigating the death.

Police have not revealed the name and identity of the slain security worker and his family are in touch with his family overseas.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of one of our team," Countdown managing director Dave Chambers told NZ Herald.

"The safety of our people and customers is our absolute priority, and no New Zealander should go to work and not expect to return home to their loved ones.

"Our focus right now is to support the family and our team in whatever way we can.

"We've also made as much information and footage as we have available to the police and will continue to cooperate with their investigation."

The Indian Weekender has asked police for an update on the incident and is waiting for the response.
