‘Golden years of old age’- GOPIO facilitates workshop for seniors

The Auckland Chapter of the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) sponsored a workshop for senior citizens on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Bharatiya Samaj Mt Roskill War Memorial Hall.

The workshop titled - Golden years of Old Age – and presented by renowned Psychologist in the community, Dr Prakash Grover, aimed to educate the seniors with the skills to lead a stress-free life while ageing gracefully.

Dr Grover is a registered Psychologist with more than 30 years of experience in dealing with a variety of learning and behaviour issues in children, youth and adults.

The open discussion workshop covered how best the senior citizens can utilize the golden years of their life.

The two-way conversation between the presenter and those attending the workshop electrified the atmosphere in the room, with many in the room longing for more such workshops in future.

Dr Grover emphasised the importance of accepting the inevitability of death to overcome any worries and stress around it affecting the elderly community.

“Death is not a threat; it is going to come one day, why to worry about this now and live life fully,” Prof. Grover said.

The importance of peers and friends, and keeping pace with the changing technology, were also emphasised during the workshop, as loneliness and solitude were identified as the force-multiplier of stress in life, which needs to be negotiated deftly.

A video was also shown at the workshop as the part of audio-visual learning.

Speaking to the Indian Weekender, Shefali Mehta, President, GOPIO, Auckland Central, expressed satisfaction with the response received from the participants.

“It was really encouraging to receive positive feedback about the workshop,” Ms Mehta said.

“Some seniors told us that we are living positively now, but after listening to Dr Grover, we will try to live life even more positively and avoid negative thinking,” said an elated Ms Mehta.

The luncheon event started at 11 a.m. and witnessed participation from around 200 people of all the ages.

The event had participation from several Auckland Council Local Board Members.
