Malayali Samajam’s Easter event wows community

The Auckland Malayali Samajam on Saturday, April 14 hosted its Easter and Vishu event at Auckland Normal Intermediate in Mt Eden showcasing an array of local talents performing at the event.

AMS’s Easter and Vishu Kalasadhya 2018 is one of the many events hosted by the Malayali community to celebrate the Christian festival of Easter and Baisakhi or harvest festival of the Malayali community.

Honorary Consul of India in Auckland Bhav Dhillon, former NZ First MP Mahesh Bindra, Assistant Chaplain of Syro Malabar Catholic Mission Fr Thomas Cherukanayil and Dr Balakrishna Pillay were invited as the guests for the event.

Both Easter and Vishu are observed and celebrated on a significant scale by the Malayali community in Kerela India and the extended Malayali diaspora across the globe.

These celebrations give the local communities the opportunity to mix and mingle and create a stronger bond amongst the community members. Easter witnesses a full house occupancy of all the churches while Vishu too is celebrated with community events and programmes.

The celebration in Auckland saw new local talents perform dance, songs and musical instruments at the event. An exceptional performance was given by a group of men clad in a traditional white cloth wrapped around the waist called Mundu with golden borders called Kara beating huge drums called Chenda.

The event concluded with dinner for the community members.

The Auckland Malayali Samajam Inc. is a community organisation for the people of Kerala in New Zealand. The community organisation is led by Soman Mathew as the newly appointed president of the Samajam in Auckland and conducts many community activities engaging the Malayali diaspora in the country.

Auckland Malayali Samajam provides its services to the Malayali community across the country in collaboration with regional Malayali Samajams. It extends assistance to the community members who live in almost every part of the country.
