New team elected at Malayali Samajam’s AGM

The Auckland Malayali Samajam hosted its Annual General Meeting on Saturday, January 20, at Auckland Normal School Mt. Eden and elected a new team to govern its activities for 2018.
The new team will be led by Soman Mathew as the new president, Pradhu Unnithan as vice-president and Blessan M Jose as the secretary. Dr Micheal Manjallor was the presiding officer while electing the new team at the AGM.
The relieving president of AMS Benny Jacob extended his gratitude towards the members for allowing him to be of service to the community and congratulated the new team for its activities for the year.
“Amid celebrations and loud cheers from Malayali community members, Auckland Malayali Samajam has elected the new committee for the year 2018,” newly appointed secretary of the Samajam said.
The Malayalees, a community that migrated from Kerala in the south of India has grown to over 20,000 members in New Zealand now, of which 15,000 live in Auckland.
Although AMS is an organisation of the Malayalee community of Auckland, it provides its services to the Malayali community across the country in collaboration with regional Malayali Samajams. It extends assistance to the community members who live in almost every part of the country.
The organisation has hosted numerous community events, Kerala celebrations, language promotions, indigenous sports and games and cultural activities in addition to charitable works.
Cultural events were also held along with the AGM, which was followed by a dinner party for the community members. The event attracted the considerable attention of the community as an inter-district tug-of-war competition was held on this occasion. This tournament was attended by Malayali community members from different parts of the country.
