Immigration NZ admits flawed assessments of resident visa applications

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has accepted that its assessments of residence visa applications for Information and communication technology (ICT) professionals is flawed and will review its guidelines hence.

A recent report by Radio NZ has confirmed that INZ has accepted their flaw, which they look forward to amending by reviewing the applications.

This review comes after a group of 15 applicants who successfully appealed to the Immigration and Protection Tribunal.

INZ area manager MarcelleForey told the media that INZ is in the process of reassessing the applications and will review the assessment guidelines for ICT jobs to ensure they reflect the tribunal’s directives.

Meanwhile, the group’s lawyer Simon Laurent had told the media that immigration officials had argued that the call centre workers merely pulled answers from databases and guided customers rather than fixing the IT systems themselves.

He further added that any customer support role nowadays relies on its people driving institutional knowledge from Knowledge Databases.

Mr Laurent reiterated that INZ took this route to reduce record-term migration numbers by rejecting hundreds of such applications.

INZ area manager Marcelle Forey confirmed that INZ in the past had approved the residency applications of applicants employed in these types of ICT roles.

Immigration statistics showed that they had rejected 59 residency applications for ICT professionals in the last financial year, which is double the number, the year before and 27 more rejections in the last few months of 2017.
