Kiwi-bank has got it wrong: Michael Wood on Owairaka Post Shop

The new Parliamentary Under-Secretary and MP for Mt Roskill Michael Wood have openly decried Kiwi-Bank on rolling back from Owairaka Post Shop in Mt Albert.

Mr Wood was speaking with The Indian Weekender on Monday, December 11, for the first time after becoming Under Secretary in the new government.

“I am very disappointed with the position that Kiwi-Bank has taken on Owairaka Post Shop.

“I think they have got it completely wrong and I am encouraging them to review their position and revoke the decision to walk away from the Post Shop,” Mr Wood asserted.

“I have met with them in my office in Wellington and very clearly laid out my views that they change their position.

“I am hoping that they have heard that,” Mr Wood further added.

However, it does not look like that Kiwi-Bank has heard that so far as the shop owner has not yet heard anything from them and his supporters are planning another protest soon.

Meanwhile, Mr Wood also told The Indian Weekender that this government was committed to community safety – a task specially delegated to Mr Wood as Under Secretary in the new government.

“This is a role that not many people are familiar with.

“Basically an under-secretary assists a Minister work in a particular area.

“I am Under Secretary to the Minister of Ethnic Communities Jenney Salesa, and I work closely with her in delivering government’s program in that area.

“In my case, the Minister has delegated me the task of Community Safety, which is very important for the members of Kiwi-Indian community and other ethnic communities,” Mr Wood told the Indian Weekender.

On the question that what he plans to do differently for the Kiwi-Indian community, Mr Wood identified increasing the number of Police actively on the beat in the community and increasing resources in community patrol as the topmost priority.

“Our government is committed to increasing police numbers by 1800 in the next four years.

“Minister for Police Stuart Nash is working closely with Police commissioner on how to increase the number of police actively on the beat in the community,” Mr Wood said.

“I am also committed and strongly advocating for a diverse police force,” Mr Wood further added.

About increasing resources in community patrolling, Mr Woods said,” I have met with Chris Lawton, President of New Zealand Community Patrol to talk about how to work together.”

“This will help in extend the reach of Police so there are more eyes and ears in the community.”
