Fun day for race relations

Fun day for race relations
The Hindu Youth Foundation is organising a Family Fun Day on Sunday March 21 to celebrate the 2010 Race Relations Day and bring families and communities together.

The activities will be held at 2-30 Bukem Pl, Mangere East, Manukau. Entry to this event is FREE.

Race Relations Day is a major event in the Human Rights Commission’s calendar and is marked in a number of different ways around the country. It is a step closer to bridging the gap between the different races that make up the multi-cultural New Zealand.

Discrimination is an issue that is prevalent in the society across all cross-sections and the answers on how to reduce it constantly baffle stakeholders.

One solution is to reduce the degree of separation between the different communities and increase interaction and understanding of each other. Hindu Youth Foundation has taken up a small task of trying to make a positive step in this direction.

Hindu Youth Foundation is a division of the Hindu Council of New Zealand and since its inception in January 2008 it has been using opportunities to bring not only the youth, but families together on a platform and encourage understanding of different communities.

The day will cater to all ages and physical abilities of people. “This free event has a range of activities organised from soccer, cricket, netball, volleyball, table tennis, carom board to face painting, bouncing castle and tug-of-war, planned for families to participate and enjoy,” said Darsha Patel, one of the co-ordinators of the event.

All interests – competitive and social (with family teams) – would be equally catered for. To ensure there are no disappointments in matching a team to your level, registration is important. People are also encouraged to take part in more than one activity organized on the day.

There would be a number of food stalls available to try out Indian vegetarian delicacies, but a family picnic to soak in the atmosphere will be most welcomed. Just before the completion, people will have an opportunity to play with Holi colours similar to Rotorua Holi Festival.

The vision of Hindu Youth Foundation is to bring together like-minded youth and set up a HYF Recreational Centre. Race Relations Day celebration will become an annual event.

To enjoy this day, bring your family, your friends, your neighbours and celebrate Race Relations Day 2010 the Fun Way, the HYF Way.
