Indian Naval Ship INS Sumitra participates in joint naval exercise in NZ waters

The ships arrived in Auckland as a part of Royal New Zealand Navy led international naval review has commenced 2-day joint maritime exercises to enhance interoperability and joint manoeuvring capabilities in the high-sea.

The Indian Naval ship INS Sumitra is also participating in the multi-national joint naval exercise.

Royal New Zealand Navy-led exercises Nga Tahi and Mahi Tangaroa are maritime security exercises that have been designed to maximise the training opportunity provided by the presence of at least 15 international Navies.

Exercise Mahi Tangaroa is the ASEAN (Association of South Eastern Asian Nations) Defence Ministers Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) Field Training Exercise, a maritime border security and anti-contraband proliferation activity which will see the participating nations move to intercept fictitious threats to New Zealand’s borders.

The exercise signals the end of the three-year term New Zealand has spent as co-chair of the Experts Working Group on Maritime Security.

Some of the nations invited to participate in the International Naval Review are not members of ASEAN, so Exercise Nga Tahi will provide tailored maritime security competencies training for them as well as the additional ASEAN assets not being utilised for Exercise Mahi Tangaroa.

Commander Joint Forces New Zealand Major General Tim Gall says these exercises are part of the NZDF’s regular international engagement and demonstrate a commitment, alongside Government objectives, to enhance cooperation throughout the region.

“Exercises Mahi Tangaroa and Nga Tahi aim to enhance maritime cooperation amongst our regional partners, while further developing interoperability.  They also give us the opportunity to build and strengthen relationships with Navies that we don’t often work with.”
