Police Minister confident that burglaries have gone down

The National government is all set to present a rosy picture on crime statistics ahead of the upcoming elections next year.

Minister of Police Judith Collins speaking on a National Party meeting with the community on Monday, November 07 at the Cosmopolitan Club, Mangere affirmed that policy change initiated by the government since last month has begun to yield dividends - a decline in the incidences of burglaries in Auckland.

Minister asserted that since burglary was declared a priority issue in late August, there has been a decline in burglary instances.

Although she acknowledged that the crime statistics were still high and a matter of high priority for the government.

The meeting was facilitated by National List MP Kanwaljit Bakshi.

MP Kanwaljit Bakshi is the Chairperson of the Law and Order Select Committee and a Member of Commerce Select Committee.

Mark Rowbottom the Inspector of Counties Police Manukau and a senior police figure also accompanied the Minister to respond to any specific queries from the members of public present in the meeting.

The latest crime statistics suggests that there have been a 26% increase in the instances of robberies and extortion on the Indian community in the last year.

The numbers jumped from 426 in August 2015 to 537 in August 2016

When Indian Weekender asked Minister in this regard expressing concerns of the Indian community, Minister acknowledged that there was a problem but attributed it to bad parenting of some members of community rather than any systematic target of the Indian community.

The minister reiterated a hint that she has been giving everywhere she is speaking (last week she was in Christchurch) that very soon Prime Minister is going to announce a big decision on police, which is speculated to be an increase in the number of police. 

Collins emphasised the fact that according to some global index New Zealand is considered as the 4th safest country in the world .
