New life from old rubbish

A cycle-powered water sculpture made from found materials and a worm farm in an old bathtub show there is plenty of life left in the stuff that goes to landfill.
The pieces are part of the new experience trail and ‘make space’ at Auckland Council’s Waste Minimisation Learning Centre in Henderson, which has been renovated as a showcase for zero waste.
“Zero waste is a philosophy that means looking at waste as a resource rather than something we just throw away,” says Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse. “The transformed learning centre will allow us to visually show people what this can mean, which is very exciting.”
The experience trail is designed by award-winning landscape architect Jill Rice, who also designed the Potter Children’s Garden at the Auckland Botanic Gardens. Community groups and schools can book a visit to the centre by calling 09 301 0101.
