An Indian student has been wrongly accused of sexual abuse and has received death threats. Rajwinder Singh who is a student in Christchurch was on a bus when someone clicked a picture of him and posted on facebook falsely accusing him of molestation.
The photo which was uploaded in January 2015 instantly went viral and hosted 100s of backlash comments, and since has been spreading the word. When Rajwinder approached the cops, he was denied any protection and his report was not even penned by the police in Christchurch.
The photo and comment which went viral on the ‘Missing Persons Christchurch and Canterbury’ page of Facebook however three weeks back the admin posted an apology and deleted the comment from the page.
"OK that post is deleted," the new message said
Although the post was deleted, Rajwinder faced defamation and has been going through a tough time ever since.
"It's really affected me, and my family are really scared," he said. "I can't go outside at night now" he added.
Singh said he now wanted to raise awareness in New Zealand on "my culture and people". He was also received remarks such as ‘terrorist’, mocking his turban and called to deport him.
"I again apologise. I get I did something wrong. It was a mistake though. As I said I am trying to get justice for my friend." Mentioned one on the ‘Missing Persons Christchurch and Canterbury’ page.
After issuing the apology the page met with further backlash from people calling the administrator "racist" and "irresponsible".
Rajwinder while speaking to a TV reporter sobbed and said "I just told them [the police] if something happens to me in the future who will help me?", but the police refused any help or further investigations.
Singh said he now wanted to raise awareness in New Zealand on "my culture and people".
