Renewing the old and forging new ties

Parliament takes a break over the Christmas New Year period and starts in early February, which gives members of parliament a decent amount of time to re-charge their batteries and spend time with their families. This is especially needed after an Election Year. This summer was no exception and I chose to spend the time with my extended family in India.

First things first. Thank you for the wonderful support you have given me, Rt Hon Winston Peters and NZ First. We worked hard in the election and had a wonderful summer break to rest before the big year ahead, but we did not rest on our laurels.

Secondly, let me tell you about my trip to India. To tell you the truth, I didn’t have much time for a holiday as I was so busy meeting many wonderful people!

For me as a New Zealander of Indian descent it is important to keep ties with family, friends and officials in India. I have a strong belief that the future of both of our great Commonwealth nations working together for the benefit of both nations, will be based on such relationships.

I spent my time in and around where I grew up – Mumbai – and had some lovely surprises whilst there. I was honoured by the local temple in Sion, the area I grew up in and the school, Guru Nanak High School, where I studied as a child. I was also incredibly honoured to attend a very large public function where I was honoured by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council - VHP) in Kolhapur.

I look forward to working more on our relationship with India this year as a New Zealand First MP and to working with our New Zealand Indian community, you, to advance solutions to your issues and support your welfare.
