THE India New Zealand Business Council celebrated 25 years of establishment this week with a celebratory gala dinner following the business summit ‘‘Business Beyond Barriers’’ earlier in the day on July 8.
With 300 guests in attendance, the gala dinner hosted an esteemed array of guests, including Prime Minister John Key, former Governor-General, Sir Anand Satyanand, representatives from the Labour Party and National Party, and the High Commissioner of India.
The evening’s ceremonies began with a traditional Maori Powhiri performed by the Unitec Kapa Haka group, Matatapu. The rich culture demonstrated by Matatapu symbolised the overall cultural celebrations that took place throughout the summit and gala dinner, leaving guests with warm hearts and a deep appreciation for the diversity of life in New Zealand.

Highlights included the unveiling of the INZBC New Zealand Post stamp by the Prime Minister. Former Indian Weekender designer Tanmay Desai designed a touching, and culturally rich stamp, displaying the words “Kia Ora” written in Hindi. This beautiful design is printed on a limited number of stamps available at New Zealand Posts offices by enquiry.

Mr Key spoke to the full room of highly regarded guests about his ideas regarding trade between India and New Zealand.
“We have a tremendous opportunity to have great ties with India on many fronts,” Mr Key said.
“If you think about India, it’s the biggest democracy in the world. India shares our loves, and is the largest English speaking population in the world.”
Mr Key spoke of the impact of the new Prime Minister in India, and the potential for a Free Trade Agreement, saying, ‘’I think the real challenge for New Zealand is going be being as aggressive as we can be to get an FTA with India”.
His closing remarks summed up the current position of India by saying, “Change is coming to India”, change that we all observe with great hope and bated breath.

INZBC patron and New Zealand cricket great Sir Richard Hadlee was also in attendance at the gala dinner.
Sir Richard spoke to the crowded room about the journey of the India New Zealand Business Council. His speech had the audience laughing right throughout; as he discussed his relationship with India, looking back fondly on the experiences he has had as a cricket player and brand ambassador.
Sir Richard offered advice to New Zealand companies venturing into Indian markets, saying, “be committed and don’t just dabble, make the decision and just go for it. Back up your product or service with technology, expertise and some of your own staff on the ground.”
The gala dinner was a wonderful way to venerate 25 years of trade relationship development between India and New Zealand, and conclude the day of business symposiums hosted at the Pullman Hotel, Auckland.

With 25 years under their belt, the India New Zealand Business Council looks towards the future with great hope and expectations for continued trade development between India and New Zealand.
