Dr. Ajit Swaran Singh inducted to the Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame 2014

Auckland, (Thursday May 1, 2014): Auckland District court judge, Dr. Ajit Swaran Singh was inducted into the Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame for 2014 trophy by Rt Hon Prime Minister John Key, at the Princes Ballroom of the Pullman Hotel, Auckland on Thursday evening.

The Rt. Hon. Prime Minister John Key, Indian High Commissioner Ravi Thapar, Hon. Winston Peters Ms. Penny Simmonds, CEO of Southern Institute of Technology, Owners of the Indian Weekender Mr. Giri Gupta, and Bhav Dhillion were all praise about the growth of Indian Weekender as it completed 5 years, and how the Indian community has added its vibrancy and spleandour to New Zealand society.

To mark the 5th Anniversary of the Indian Weekender newspaper, the prime Minister also inaugurated the special edition of the newspaper on stage.

Dignitaries and many honorable guests attended the event, apart from the who's who of the Indian community here in New Zealand.

About 300 guests were treated to a grand evening, with traditional 'Shiva Kavutuvam' (an ode to God Shiva the Hindu God of Dance) a Bharathanatyam performance, and other traditional delights warmed the guests to an ambience that generated a lot of enthusiasm around who the inductee will be this year.

Dr. Ajit Swaran Singh, received a thunderous round of applause when his name was announced, his achievements and repertoire in society was undeniable.

He is the first Fiji-born Indian to be appointed to the District Court Bench in New Zealand when he was sworn in as a judge in Manukau on 4 November 2002. He has outstanding credentials and achievements as a lawyer, a judge, and as a community leader.

Educated in Fiji, New Zealand and Canada, Dr. Singh has always led the charge in fostering the interests our society through community education on social issues, as a White Ribbon Ambassador in New Zealand: on campaign against family violence, as a Visiting Professor of Law: in the field of legal education in Fiji, as well as being a Mentor & a Role Model, and above all: in recognition of his invaluable contributions in promoting the honour and prestige of New Zealand, Fiji & India.

Born in the beautiful Fiji Islands, Dr Singh is of Indian heritage. His maternal grandparents came from Rajasthan & Varanasi, India, to Fiji under the Indenture system and his paternal grandparents came in 1929 from Jallandhar, Punjab.

Dr Singh & Subhag, a school teacher, have been married for 41 years. They have 3 children: Anjeet, Amit and Shobita, all of whom are graduates of the Auckland University. His mother, Pritam Kaur & majority of his extended family reside in New Zealand, with some members in Australia, UK, USA & Canada.

The Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame presented by the Indian Weekender is a prestigious event, only in its in its second year, honouring a member from the Kiwi Indian community who has achieved levels of distinction in both merit and conduct.
