Indian leather exporters foreshadow FTA opportunities
Thirteen Indian leather exporters coming to New Zealand to set up business deals with New Zealand operations might in itself not signal an Indian summer of international trade, but it’s a very good start, according to India-New Zealand trade specialist Raga D’silva.

“We hear a lot about green shoots in terms of coming out of the recession, but we could well talk of green shoots in terms of trade between India and New Zealand too,” Ms D’silva, director of India-New Zealand trade specialist Global Village Unlimited, said.

New Zealand and India agreed in February to begin negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that would give New Zealand prime access to one of the world’s largest and fastest growing economies.

“The fact is that trade between our two countries has huge potential,” she said.

“India is a sleeping giant for New Zealand in terms of trade with a growing and spending middle class of something like 300 million people.

“The FTA will wake that giant and open it up to New Zealand businesses, and obviously open doors from the Indian side too,” she said.

The growth has already begun. New Zealand’s exports to India doubled in the year to June to $727 million, up from $361 million in June 2008. Imports from India during the same 12 month period increased by 20 percent, from $285 million to $342 million.

“India is now New Zealand’s thirteenth largest export market – just 12 months ago, the trade relationship didn’t even make the top 20. Things are moving in the right direction.  Indian Government identified New Zealand as one of the Focus markets for exports from India.

“That’s tremendous growth – but in many respects it’s just the beginning in terms of potential bilateral trade,” Ms D’silva said.

“Trade is a two-way street, and the leather exporters coming here this month are a part of that.”

She said the 13 Indian businessmen with high-end leather products ranging from footwear to garments and personal accessories through to upholstery, come under the umbrella of India’s Council for  Leather Exports. They will be in Auckland on Monday, 31 August, for a Buyer-Seller Meet with potential New Zealand business partners, and have the full backing of the Indian High Commission and India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Further Indian Government-supported trade visits to New Zealand representing the apparel, and gems and jewellery industries are currently being planned.

“This is clearly a sign of India gearing up its trade intentions towards New Zealand, and it’s a very positive development,” Ms D’silva, who is also on the India-New Zealand Business Council’s executive committee, said.

She said amid all the large trade figures, events such as the Council for Leather Exports’ Buyer-Seller Meet were a reminder of the basics of good business.

Ms D’silva said that whatever area of trade is being developed, in the end, all business is about relationships.

“At its most fundamental level, doing business generally is about two people sitting down and working out how they can work with each other, trade and both come out with a winning formula,” she said.

“These businessmen are here to talk and to meet. A lot can come from that”?
New Zealand’s leather imports increased by US$110 million in just five years, up from US$140 million in 2002 to US$250 million in 2007 – growth of 11.5 percent a year.
