Festive luncheon celebrates diversity and trade ties

Around 500 customers joined ANZ to celebrate Diwali – Festival of lights – last Friday in the bank’s biggest Diwali customer luncheon to date.
When the first Diwali luncheon was held six years ago, the guest list numbered just 20 customers.
“The growth in this event reflects the growing importance of Diwali on New Zealand’s cultural calendar, and the growth in ANZ’s involvement in the Indian community,” said Sunil Kaushal, ANZ’s Head of India Relations.
“We recognise that the Indian community is a major part of the community and makes a major contribution to business and our local culture.
“We are enormously proud to host a Diwali celebration, to thank our customers for their support over the past year and acknowledge the contribution of members of our Indian community.”
ANZ was the first bank to have a dedicated Indian Banking Unit and around 15% of staff in ANZ’s Auckland Business Banking team are Indian. This year along ANZ helped more than 3000 Indian customers into a banking relationship.
Keynote speaker of the event was The Hon Steven Joyce, The Minister for Economic Development. He reiterated the importance of New Zealand and India’s historical and political ties as well as highlighting New Zealand’s growing popularity as a tourist destination, with 30,000 Indians visiting the country each year.
David Hisco, CEO of ANZ New Zealand, spoke of the ongoing commitment to supporting trade with India and the growing emphasis on educational exchanges between the two countries.
“India is a strategic market for us that will continue to offer huge opportunities for trade growth,” he said.
First secretary at the Indian High Commission, Mukesh Rundev, New Zealand Cricket board member Geoff Allott and Chennai Super Kings Coach Stephen Fleming also spoke at the event.
