Community leader awarded top state accolade

Eminent Auckland community leader Dr Lingappa Kalburgi, MNZM, JP has been conferred the prestigious Karnataka State Government Rajotsava Award 2012 for his services to the Kannada community outside India.

He founded the popular Kannda Koota, an organisation representing people from the state of Karnataka living in New Zealand. He has been recognised for his contribution to Kannada culture, language and heritage promotion in New Zealand.

The award, which is conferred on the occasion of the foundation day of the southern Indian state of Karnataka, was this year announced on November 1. It was conferred on 57 eminent persons this year, to mark the 57th anniversary of the state’s formation.

Dr Kalburgi is currently Chairman, Business Committee of the New Zealand Indian Central Association and active Executive Committee member of the Auckland Indian Association as Chairman of the Business Committee and Tagore Library.

He is also actively involved with Mt Roskill Business & Community Groups Association as President, Auckland District Council of Social Services (ADCOSS) as Executive Committee member and The Asian network Inc. (TANI), as Founder Treasurer.

“It is my passion to serve the community as per my expertise”, says Dr Kalburgi, who leaves for India this month to collect the award at a special ceremony since he was not able to be present for the official conferment ceremony on November 1.

Dr Kalburgi has a Masters degree in mathematics and a PhD in Library and Information Science besides several other qualifications in India and New Zealand. He is a Justice of the Peace for New Zealand since 2004 and has received the “MNZM” Queen’s Award for serving the Indian community in 2007.

Indian Weekender congratulates Dr Kalburgi on his latest award.
