Wellington Tamils celebrate New Year

The Tamil New Year was celebrated in style in Wellington recently. The function, held in Hutt City, was organized by the local community organisation, Wellington Mutamizh Sangam.
This group promotes connections within communities in Wellington whose cultural backgrounds are built upon the three pillars of Tamil: language, music and drama.
This year, the year Nandhana – which primarily means “that which bestows joy” returns after a cycle of 60 years.
All three pillars were in evidence at the event. Not only were traditional songs and dances performed but also Bollywood influenced acts were part of the fun.
Two young women acted as MCs and had the audience roaring with laughter. Delicious traditional food completed the hospitality.
The sum of $2500 was raised to help a school for needy children in Tamil Nadu, in Southern India.
