NZTC – supporting young children in India

A New Zealand education provider has come to the aid of abandoned children in India.

As a provider of early childhood teacher training, New Zealand Tertiary College is privileged to know and support Jagriti Children’s Home in New Delhi, India.

NZTC chief executive Selena Fox discovered the home for abandoned and abused girls while establishing NZTC’s Mumbai office in 2009. She believed that supporting the charity would align with the College’s mission of caring for and educating young children and so agreed to formally sponsor the home the same year.

Since then NZTC has come up with a number of fundraising initiatives, including selling Christmas cards illustrated by the Jagriti girls and Recipes of Hope, a cookbook of favourite recipes contributed by staff and friends of NZTC.

Last month, Barbara Scanlan, a recent graduate of NZTC, ran a fundraising stall at the Browns Bay farmer’s market selling baked goods and Indian-themed jewellery.

Barbara was inspired to support Jagriti after reading about the home in Recipes for Hope which she was gifted with when she graduated from her Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) degree late last year.

Says Barbara: “It sounded like an amazing cause to support and I liked the fact that this is a small project, where money goes to a particular place for a particular purpose.” Over $400 was collected.

The proceeds from these projects go directly to the girls of Jagriti to support their daily needs including food, education, and healthcare.

Purchase Recipes for Hope, NZTC’s fundraising cookbook for $20. All proceeds go the girls. To learn about other ways you can support Jagriti Children’s Home please call (09) 520 4000 or email jagriti@nztertiarycollege.ac.nz
