BollyworX- A Pathway to Health Success

At first, it was the unique sounding name itself ‘BollyworX’ (an aerobic workout to Bollywood music) that was drawing people from all walks of life and backgrounds to the physical activity session; then soon, people became regular ‘participants’, as they could relate to the music and found the workout easy to follow; moreover if you asked a BollyworX newbie,’ what they liked about BollyworX’ a popular reply would be ‘it’s so much fun!’.

Fortunately, it did not stop there; now, some of the regulars are noticing the positive impact that BollyworX has been having on their health. Since BollyworX employs low, medium to high-intensity, interval style exercises which frequently feature intermittent short bursts of movements such as jumping and hopping, the participants experience the recommended amount of ‘huff and puff’ factor to get the heart rate up and calories-burning.

Additionally, these athletic moments really target the fast-twitch muscles, coordination and agility, training the body in an entirely new and challenging way equalling results. Few striking examples include two participants at one of the BollyworX centers who suffer from thyroid and thus inevitable weight gain; have actually lost a modest amount of weight after having joined BollyworX; while another participant with a history of heart disease and smoking has had an improvement in his stamina and blood pressure.

How giving back to the community helps us all…..That’s not all; some of them are so excited with their small but significant health prognosis, that they want to get more regularly involved in BollyworX either by becoming a volunteer or getting trained to be an instructor. Becoming an instructor is a rewarding commitment, not only to oneself but also to one’s family. If you are willing to devote those precious remaining hours in the day (that you would normally spend with your family), in taking aerobic classes for the community, then you know that you are not only a community champion but also paving a pathway to community health success!

BollyworX is a great model of community development as it's culturally appropriate and run by an ethnic group (SPROUT) who truly understand the health risks and needs of the South Asian community.
