Talking peace

A lecture series on the current situation in Sri Lanka will be held at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) on Thursday, July 2.
Organised by the Tamil Youth Organisation (NZ), the lecture series, titled Peace in Pieces, will feature two prominent academics in their fields.
The lecturers are Dr Martin Hirst, Associate Professor of Journalism at AUT, and Professor Margaret Trawick, Professor of Social Anthropology at Massey University.
Dr Hirst will speak on Journalism, Human Rights and Terrorism in Sri Lanka. Professor Trawick will speak on Slow Genocide.
The organizers are seeking to use the lecture series to highlight the people in New Zealand of the plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka, where a recent operation by Sri Lankan soldiers destroyed most of the rebel strongholds and killed their leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran.
Thousands of Tamils are living in refugee camps in under strenuous conditions.
“With renewed strength, the Peace in Pieces Events Committee is determined to present the lecture series on the plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka,” one of the organizers, Dhaya Haran, said.
