Holi celebrated in style

Waitakere Indian Association held an entertaining and successful Holi Mela at the Trust Stadium grounds on Sunday, March 27.
Despite the rain and wet weather conditions the spirits of over a thousand participants were not dampened. People danced to the sound of Bollywood music provide by DJ Gabroo (Manish Ji) and party.
The programme was blessed by Kaumatua Dennis Henson while students from Kelston High school presented the Haka followed by traditional faag gayan and drama presented by the WIA Hindi school children assisted by their parents and teachers. Children danced in the rain and sprinkled coloured powder on each other in the true spirit of Holi.
The Race Relations Commissioner was also present to observe the race relations day that WIA embraced. The Children’s Commissioner Dr John Angus joined us and also supplied free handouts and balloons from his office.
The Waitakere Indian Association also raised funds for the earthquake victims in Christchurch. All funds raised will be given to the Earthquake Appeal Fund by WIA. The Ethnic Affairs Minister Hekia Parata and Vanessa Neeson, chair of Henderson and Massey Local board spoke highly of WIA along with other speakers.
President Anand Naidu wishes to thank everyone who participated in this event to make it a huge success.
Mr Naidu also acknowledged the dedication and hard work put in by the WIA Holi Mela project committee led by Saten Sharma along with the WIA executives, WIA Youth and Sports boys and WIA Seniors group and Volunteers including contribution made by all the sponsors and the Auckland Council.
