Food, performers take the center stage at Culture Galore

Culture Galore is an annual festival that celebrates Christchurch’s cultural diversity in a fun and family-friendly environment. The event, which was held from 12 pm until 4 pm on Saturday 18 February 2023 at Ray Blank Park, promotes cultural exchange and fosters a better understanding of the city's many different ethnicities.

On that lovely, sunny day, visitors to Culture Galore were treated to a range of performances that showcase the arts, traditions, and artistic expressions of more than 30 cultures that call Christchurch home. From Japanese drumming to colourful traditional dances and songs from India, Mexico, Russia, Fiji, Indonesia, Korea, Philippines, Poland, China, Thailand, Bangladesh and many more, there was something for everyone at this multicultural festival.

Among many performers was the vibrant group from Bangaliana Christchurch Association which showcased traditional dance in a graceful manner. The group's energetic and graceful movements, along with their beautiful costumes captured the attention of the crowd. Also appreciated was the performance by the Bharatanatyam Group of Christchurch which is known for its vibrant and colourful performances that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu.

Culture Galore also offered a variety of hands-on activities for the families to try. These include flax weaving, face painting, netball, soft archery, bouncy castles, police speed radar, fire truck and evacuation challenge, and more.

One of the highlights of Culture Galore was over 40 food stalls, which offered a diverse range of delicious ethnic cuisines from various countries. Visitors got to sample a variety of appetising dishes, providing a feast for the senses and an opportunity to discover new tastes and flavours.

The event was organised with support from the Waimaero Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood and Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Boards.

Culture Galore has become an important event in the cultural calendar of Christchurch. By promoting cultural exchange and understanding, the festival helps to build more inclusive communities and help people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and celebrate the unique traditions and customs of different ethnicities.
