More than 80 matches played at Chch badminton tournament

The Telugu Badminton Club of Canterbury(TBCC) held its End of Year Tournament 2022 in Christchurch on Sunday, 11 December with participation by 80 badminton players.

A total of 87 matches with 192 games were played with on eight courts over 8 hours. Mens' Doubles was played over four divisions with one Women's Doubles event. 

The tournament featured professional as well as social players from various ethnic communities. Women players were allowed to compete with men and eventually, one of the Women's doubles team ended up winning Men's doubles division 3 title.

The tournament is in a long series of events organised by TBCC to grow badminton in South Island and to provide equal opportunity for all the participants to excel and showcase their talent. The club has been on the forefront, offering a platform for players to showcase their talents and skills to a wider audience. The tournaments not only attract spectators, further expanding the sport and providing exposure for the players, helping them gain recognition for their talents. This can be especially important for players who are looking to advance their careers and move on to higher levels of competition.

Moreover, tournaments foster camaraderie and a sense of belonging among participants, helping them feel more connected to one another and to the badminton community and providing additional motivation and support.

Division 1

  • Gold - William Chen & Anu Ahuja
  • Silver - Alfred Wong & Mark Revis
  • Bronze - Roberto Bray-Descalzo & Sam Loan

Division 2

  • Gold - Ajesh Jose & Wasim Taj
  • Silver - Anand Satheesh & Martin Thomas
  • Bronze - Amit Sodhi & Chathura Samith

Division 3

  • Gold - Ms. Tegan Weston & Ms. Michelle Foong
  • Silver - Anil Kumar & Sundeep Daggubati
  • Bronze - Sidhartha Daggubati & Sam Yuan

Division 4

  • Gold - Pavan Kruthinti & Yaswanth Katragadda
  • Silver - Jasper Wong & Jason Zhang
  • Bronze - Eric Xue & Timothy Yuan

Women's Doubles

  • Gold - Kelly Shen & Anna Kim
  • Silver - Karla Mirana & Ruby Lamadora
  • Bronze - Zooni Ahuja & Chloe Gray

The event was sponsored by Generation Homes along with other local business establishments. Awards were presented to the winners by Mr. Dinesh Chattikal, Director - Spice Bazar, Mr. Khaja Mohiuddin -Director, Indian Paradise, Mr. Dhaval Lamghare-Harcourts Vision Residential sales consultant and Mr. Chenna Reddy of Eco Travels.

 

Rajeswar Peddisetti, organiser and president of TBCC said, “This is the 4th badminton tournament we have organised this year, and it was heartening to see the growth of badminton in New Zealand. I thank all the players and sponsors for their support in making the event a great success. We remain committed to the sport's development and will continue to organise more competitions in future to connect the communities through sport.”
