Fiji police take tough stance

Fiji police have come out in strong support of their New Zealand counterparts as far as maintaining law and order in the region was concerned.

A senior Fiji Police officer said they would always ensure justice was met no matter where the crime was committed.

“Former Fiji people who commit a crime in New Zealand or anywhere in the world and then come to get away in Fiji should think twice,” Senior Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said at the weekend.

Mr Sokomuri, speaking to Auckland radio station Apna 990, was referring to a recent case where a former Fiji resident “fled” to Fiji following the death of his wife in Huntly.

Davesh Sharma left for Fiji with his four-year-old son a day after his wife Ranjeeta Sharma’s burning body was found by the roadside late last month.

Soon after his arrival in Fiji, Davesh was quickly located by Fiji police and apprehended. Last week he was handed over to New Zealand police who went to Fiji to try and locate him. Davesh was now facing a murder charge and was expecting to be appear in court this week.

“People who think they can take advantage of the strained diplomatic relations between Fiji and New Zealand should think twice,” Mr Sokomuri said.

“There’s no strained relations between the police forces of the two countries.”

Mr Sokomuri told the radion station Davesh was located in a Rakiraki village in western Fiji and did not attempt to resist arrest. His four-year-old son Akash is being looked after by relatives in Fiji.

The case has sparked widespread controversy and clogged the airwaves of Indian radio stations from concerned listeners.

Many callers to radio stations also raised concerns about the referral by mainstream New Zealand to the case as “honour killing” when the NZ police have clearly stated they were investigating a homicide.

Callers said the so-called honour killing “did not exist in Fiji”.
