Young talent set to strut their stuff

Young talent set to strut their stuff

It’s bigger, it’s better and it’s on again.

Miss and Master Teen Indian NZ is on next month and is expected to be more exciting than the inaugural event held two years ago.

This year’s event will be held at TelstraClear Events Centre’s Genesis Theatre in Manukau on February 12, starting at 7pm.

And 25 contestants have been put through their paces for the past two months by organiser Tanya Mehra, the brains behind the concept.

Tanya is not taking this pageant lightly as she is keen on developing the contestants’ confidence and self esteem to serve them well in the future.

Of all people, Tanya should know as she has been a beauty queen in India herself, and as familiar with the full rigours of such competitions.

Tanya, of Hillsborough, Auckland, was Miss Delhi University in 1994 and was also part of the batch which bid for the Miss India crown – eventually won by Aishwarya Rai, now a megastar.

Having been through intensive training during her time in the pageant, Tanya came to New Zealand with her family in 2002.

In her opinion, what she saw of the local Miss IndiaNZ pageants over the years left her dissatisfied that the participants were actually reaping any benefits out of it.

“There should be a strong focus on building character, and that is what I have aimed to do,” Tanya told Indian Weekender this week.

Tanya and her small team help the contestants to develop and improve their talent and dancing skills; develop personality; Q& A skills; health and fitness sessions; fundraising programmes and sessions; media exposure; photo shoots.

All intended to enhance contestants’ inter national exposure; confidence; self esteem; social responsibility and awareness; self presentation; leadership quality; innovation and Interaction; genuine platform to showcase their brain and inner beauty.

Tanya said her team “would train and work on each and every participant so that they can gain self-confidence, expose their talent to the max and at the same time they will get acquainted to the rich Indian culture and tradition.

“It’s 100 per cent result oriented, 100 per cent entertainment; 100 per cent Made in New Zealand.”

For their efforts, the Miss and Master Teen India NZ winners will get an all expenses trip to participate in the Miss Teen /Master Teen international pageant to be held in Chicago in July. Runners-up get $1000, and $500 each respectively.

Tanya, who gained her BSc in Sports Science from Delhi University and Masters in Sports Science from Bhopal University, said she was passionate about the pageant, and was now determined to get it going regularly after a brief lapse in 2009 because of a family tragedy.

The inaugural competition in 2008 was won by Rashmi Dubshi, who later gained Canadian citizenship and had to relinquish her title and responsibilities; so the title was awarded to second runner-up Lucy Russell when the first runner-up Sheenal failed to carry out her responsibilities as required in the pageant rules.

Tanya said Lucy had more than lived up to her responsibilities and was one of the main drivers of this year’s competition.

The male section was won by Master Teen Raja Sandhu, 1st Runner up-Rikash Kumar, 2nd Runner up-Sahil Arora.

The event is organised, designed by Tanya along with her efficient team. Choreographed by Faisal, dance choreography by Lucy Russell and Raja Sandhu, model co-ordinator Manan Walia and production co-ordinator is Harneet Kaur.
