GG's presence at diaspora meet welcomed

Auckland: The India New Zealand Business Council (INZBC) has welcomed New Zealand Governor General Sir Anand Satyanand’s presence as Chief Guest at the Ninth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas recently held at New Delhi.

“It is with great joy and honour that we received the news of Sir Anand’s presence as Chief Guest at the most recent Pravasi Bharatiya Divas,” INZBC Chair, Auckland-based businessman Wenceslaus Anthony said.

“The Indian diaspora worldwide in general and in New Zealand in particular were recognised in our motherland with India’s President Pratibha Patil honouring Sir Anand Satyanand with a Pravasi Bhartiya Samman Award for his outstanding achievements in public life,” he said.

One of 15 awarded in 2011, Sir Anand joins past New Zealand winners District Judge Dr Ajit Swaran Singh (2008) and Dame Sukhi Turner (2204), a past Mayor of Dunedin. Other well-known winners from other countries include Basdeo Panday, a past Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, well-known writers Shashi Tharoor and Vikram Seth and also golfer Vijay Singh.

INZBC is supportive of all links between India and New Zealand, having asserted this in the past, and acknowledges the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in particular as the keynote event for Indian NRIs and PIOs globally.

“The event is of global standing and It is very heartening to think at such an event that Sir Anand Satyanand in his keynote address would say ‘It seems to me essential that we support organisations such as the India-New Zealand Business Council and the Asia New Zealand Foundation to harness and focus the Diaspora’s energy.’" Mr Anthony said.

"On that subject, I would like to thank our Governor General most warmly on behalf of the India New Zealand Business Council for the confidence he reposes on us and want to assure him that we will be doing our utmost to be a leading part of the efforts to harness that diasporial energy.

“We also acknowledge and support Sir Anand’s core comment on the Global Indian and their existence as an exemplar of the best that globalisation has to offer. This is certainly true and INZBC has many such members.

“But we also want to make very clear that our membership comes from a very wide base serving no particular ethnic group at all and is entirely secular. The Council grew spectacularly last year and we are hopeful of continuing our strong growth in 2011 and Sir Anand’s unique honour of being chosen as Chief Guest augurs extremely well for the New Year.”
