NZICA, affiliates to celebrate R-Day jointly

Auckland: The New Zealand Indian Central Association NZICA is leading affiliated Kiwi Indian organisations in celebrating India's 61st Republic Day on Saturday, January 29.

Popular opinion in the Kiwi Indian community has veered toward events of national significance to India such as the Indian Independence Day and Republic Day to be celebrated unitedly by all organisations rather than separately.

"All of NZICA branches and associate members are collaborating in organising the celebration," Mr Prakash Biradar, Coordinator Republic Day Celebration Committee, NZICA told Indian Weekender. Mr Biradar is also the President of the Kannada Koota.

NZICA, established in 1926, has been working efficiently for years to fight against oppressive legislation and discriminatory immigration policy, and to promote harmony between Indians and other communities in New Zealand.

The Central Association is a single body comprising various independent, self governing, incorporated Indian Associations looking after the cause of all Indians, be it political, educational, health, welfare or cultural identity.

This year's Republic Day event is being hosted by The Auckland Indian Association at Mahatma Gandhi Centre 145 New North Road Eden Terrace Mt Eden Auckland. The flag hoisting ceremony will be followed by cultural performances. Celebrations begin at 11 am.

All are invited to participate.
