MIQ room release postponed for 24 hours due to Omicron situation

The latest round of MIQ room releases has been postponed for 24 hours due to the Omicron situation.

The release scheduled for today will take place at midday tomorrow, with the lobby opening at 11am.

The delay was so the government could "carefully manage capacity as more travellers spend longer in MIQ, reducing availability," a tweet from MBIE said.

Whole genome sequencing has now detected nine further cases of Omicron in international arrivals, taking New Zealand's total to 22 cases with the variant.

The World Health Organisation has urged people to cancel some of their holiday plans to protect public health as the Omicron variant spreads globally.

The government will provide an update at 2pm on its Covid-19 response in light of the Omicron variant spreading around the world, including possible changes to the border reopening.
