Hairdressers breathe a sigh of relief

Hairdressers breathe a sigh of relief

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has today announced that hairdressers and barbers in Auckland can open from Thursday in a vaccination certificate trial.

However, she has also clarified that only hairdressers and barbers are part of the trial, and it doesn't include beauty salons.

Indian Weekender spoke to the beauty business owners to know their reaction to the much-awaited news. It may be noted that since Auckland got into lockdown on August 17, more than three months ago, the beauty salons and hairdressing services were closed leading to the dismay of many.

Sumita Toora of Kess Hair and Beauty, Glenfield Mall

“It is a mixed feeling. I am happy that finally, I will be able to open my store. It has been a long wait. We have already faced so many losses. I am prepared that we will have to deal with loads of clients who had been waiting to get our services and restart our business.

“However, I would like to point out that I do feel cheated by this government as the second increased resurgence payment for businesses was due this Friday and the government purposely announced the opening on Thursday so that they don't have to pay the same.

“Also, I fail to understand why beauty services can't be given when hair services can. Why a customer can't get the eyebrows done but can get a haircut done. I fail to understand the logic.”

Anita Bhola of Ladies Corner, Papatoetoe

“I am happy that at least I will be able to do my hair business and serve my clients. Even though there is still financial loss as I won’t be able to offer beauty services, but I feel something is better than nothing. I was worried that if this government does not do anything for us then I will have to close my business.

“But thankfully, at least some good news has come. My phone has not stopped ringing since this announcement. I hope we can provide full services soon.”

Dharmesh Parikh of Unique Beauty & Hair, Mt Roskill

“I am happy that the barbers and hairdressers can resume their business. It is a move in the right direction. Till when can New Zealand and especially Auckland keep its businesses shut? It is a great move to get back to normalcy. However, it does sounds silly that beauty services are still not open while hair services are.”

Bindu Grover of Bindu's Brow & Beauty, St Lukes

“I do feel that there should not have been any distinction between opening the beauty services and hair services and the government should have opened both. I have four beauty salons and out of them, we provide hair services only at one centre. So, I am still going to face losses. Having said that, it is a good starting point and I am hopeful that the destination is not far and we will be back to doing our business in full swing soon.”
