NZ miners missing after a blast

Wellington: An estimated 30 miners went missing after a blast in a New Zealand coal mine, Greymouth District mayor Tony Kokshoon said Friday.

The blast reportedly hit the Pike River Coal mine, some 50km northeast of Greymouth on the country's South Island.

Police received reports of a "big explosion" at the mine at around 1630 local time (0330 GMT),  Tony Kokshoorn told Radio New Zealand.

"It's not good news. (Police) say there's between 25 and 30 miners unaccounted for after a big explosion at the mine. We are just keeping our fingers crossed but it's not good. We do not know at what depth the explosion is but there's certainly a big explosion. With a bit of luck, things might be OK," he said.

The Pike River mine runs deep under the Paparoa Ranges on the western coast of South Island.
