A liquor store in the otherwise quiet town of Otorohonga is now the scene of a serious assault.
KiwiTown liquor store on Maniapoto Street (SH3) has been transformed into a police fortress, with a huge police presence, closing access to the entire street.
The incident has left the main street closed, with numerous police cars and ambulances attending the scene of alleged assault.
The incident occured today evening, 2nd October 2021.
It has been confirmed by the police that the incident has left one person in his 30's dead.
A homicide investigation has since been launched.
In a statement Inspector Neil Faulkner said, "Police were called to Maniapoto Street around 6:30pm to reports of a large group of people fighting.
On arrival, a man in his 30s was located seriously injured.
Medical attention was given but unfortunately the man died at the scene.
A section of Maniapoto Street/SH 3 is cordoned off while officers conduct a scene examination, and is likely to remain cordoned for some time.
Police are following lines of inquiry to locate those responsible.
We want to reassure the public Police are committed to holding these offenders to account."
