What alert level should Auckland be at – Kiwi Indians have their say

Auckland has been in alert level 4 since August 17 due to it being the epicentre of the current Covid-19 delta outbreak in New Zealand.

On September 12, 20 new community cases got announced, and all were in Auckland. Eight of them had not yet got linked to the Delta outbreak. It followed 23 new cases on Saturday, 10 of which were infectious while in the community and had created 40 exposure events.

The number of total community cases in the current community outbreak is 922. As of September 12, there are 599 active cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand, including 569 community cases that are currently being managed.

On the other side, as of September 9, 4,163,418 doses of vaccine had been administered across New Zealand. While 66 % of the eligible population had its first dose, 33 % had both doses.

While the rest of New Zealand is currently at Alert Level 2, the government is due to consider an alert level move today (September 13).

We ask Aucklanders whether Auckland, which is also known as City of Sails, should continue to remain on level 4 or not?

Here's what they have to say:

Gurpreet Singh Pruthi: I feel this lockdown should be extended at least for a week in Auckland so that we can see how many more cases are coming up. Once the number of cases starts decreasing and eventually reach zero, we should get back to our normal lives. I understand that we all go through a financial crisis during lockdown but saving lives is crucial at this point in time. And unfortunately, extending lockdown seems to be the right option at this stage.

Gurpreet Kaur: I feel this lockdown should not get extended. People have been struggling and suffering a lot financially, especially those who work in small businesses that are currently closed. People are also suffering a lot mentally, especially those who are living alone. I believe we should not go ahead with the lockdown.

Vikas Gaur: Auckland should stay at alert level 4 minimum for a week as the government is not well planned at the moment. There are still mystery cases in the community that is worrisome. Moreover, the government had a lot of time to vaccinate people, but it failed. And now everyone is paying the price for the same.

Sanjay Gupta: I feel the government should bring Auckland to level 2. Let the businesses open. Let people lead their normal life. Countries worldwide are opening up, and we can't be in lockdown. Let there be normalcy. Worldwide vaccinations are happening and countries are getting back to normal, and I believe the same should happen in New Zealand.

Punit Punni: I think alert level 4 needs to get extended in Auckland for another week. Because then, everyone will stay at home, and the risk of Covid 19 spreading in the community will be less.
