Whangarei Malayalee Association to celebrate Onam festival

Whangarei Malayalee Association (WMA) is all set to host the Onam festival in New Zealand's most northern city Whangarei – which is also known as the gateway of the popular Bay of Island.

Shaji Cherian, President of WMA, told the Indian Weekender that his team was all ready to bring together another edition of the most popular festival of the Indian state of Kerala in the community Up North.

Onam is the most revered and celebrated festival in Kerala. It is symbolic of King Mahabali's annual homecoming as well as celebrates the Vaman avatar of Lord Vishnu.

This ten-day long festival brings in the best of festive spirit among the people of Kerala and is celebrated with much splendour.

Shaji Cherian told the Indian Weekender that Onam was all about festivities, cultural programs, music and Sadhya.

For the uninitiated, Sadhya is a feast in Kerala, hugely important to all Malayalis and now increasingly becoming popular worldwide for the banquet of food items served on the banana leaf, which can vary from 24–28 dishes served as a single course or even more.

It will not be an exaggeration to say that eating Sadhya in an Onam festival is a remarkable cultural experience, and it is this kind of cultural experience that WMA wants to create for its members and guests on Tuesday, August 17.

The event is ticketed, and tickets are available by contacting Shaji Cherian on 0211432042 and Arun VR at 0273027688.
