Auckland: Kiwi Indian community leaders have congratulated the two candidates of Indian origin who have been elected to two of the new Auckland Supecity Local Boards.
Magan Ranchhod and Ella Kumar were the only two candidates of Indian origin among the thirty that contested local body elections of the Auckland Supercity.
Mr Ranchhod polled the second largest number of votes in the Pukekohe subdivision of the Franklin Local Board and Ms Kumar the sixth highest in the Puketapapa Local Board that includes the ethnic Indians-dominated Mount Roskill area in central Auckland.
A Justice of the Peace, Mr Ranchhod, MNZM, Magan has been actively involved within the community in education, sport and culture. He has also has held executive positions as Franklin District Councillor for the last six years and is a Trustee of the Franklin Arts, Culture and Library Trust, Pukekohe High School Board, Pukekohe Indian Association. He is a Rotarian.
A New Zealand born Indian, Ms Kumar is passionate about her career in physical health and wellbeing as an educator/ instructor assisting the Roskill community to lead healthier lifestyles.
Her current involvement varies from marriage celebrant, board of trustees member: Mt Roskill Campus Schools for 11 years and a Justice of the Peace. She is chairperson of Mt Roskill Junior Sports Academy and a board/committee member of the Shanti Niwas Charitable Trust and the Auckland Indian Association.
"Heartiest congratulations and well done on the reelection of Magan Ranchhod as Councillor of Franklin District.," Ratilal Champaneri, formerpresident of the New Zealand Central Indian Association (NZICA).
Kannada Koota general secretary Prakash Biradar said it was commendable that Mr Ranchhod had been elected for the second consecutive time.
Naginbhai Patel of Wellington-based Vishnu Trust also congratulated Mr Ranchhod.
"You have done proud to all of us by being elected to Auckland Council (Pukekohe ward)," Mr Veer Khar, former general secretary of the NZICA said.
While congratulating the two successful candidates of Indian origin, Paul Singh Bains, President of the NZICA slammed the perpetrators of the alleged electoral roll scandal during the elections.
"New Zealand Indian Central Association (NZICA) feels that the question of the recent breach of the Electoral Roll in South Auckland is alien to us all in New Zealand.
"NZICA is disappointed with such event happening within our community. We at NZICA disassociate ourselves from the action of the perpetrators. We boldly condemn this action of candidates who resort to fraudulent means to gain votes. The whole Indian Community is tarnished by the action of a few.
"I also think the major political parties need to do the research on the credibility of their proposed candidates more accurately."
The accused candidate who was charged last week, finished a distant seventh in the elections in Papatoetoe. He has vehemently denied the charges and said that he would the charges in court.
