Men on the Move Challenge kicks off today

A bid to encourage more men to take an active role in the region’s Walking School Bus (WSB) programme launches today. Currently, only one in seven WSB volunteers in the region are male.
The Men on the Move Challenge is run by the Auckland Regional Transport Authority’s (ARTA’s) TravelWise team to encourage more men to volunteer in the popular programme. The programme promotes safe and sustainable transport for pupils walking to and from schools across the region.
Mark Lambert, General Manager, Customer Services, ARTA, said “The Challenge which runs until 17th September, will see new and existing male volunteers entered into a competition once they have completed three walking school bus trips.
“Prizes include, two $100 Rebel Sport vouchers, four $50 Warehouse vouchers, four $50 Whitcoulls vouchers and two $50 Mitre 10 vouchers to be won, all courtesy of AMI Insurance.
“Children who walk on the WSBs are being encouraged to get their fathers, grandfathers, uncles or older brothers to get involved in the programme by taking home entry forms for the competition.”
Julian Paul, a co-ordinator for the Willow Park WSB on the North Shore, said “Choosing to walk to school with my kids and help other local children make the trip in a safe and fun way has had a really positive impact on our lives.
“It’s fantastic to see what effect it has on the children in our walk. They are really bubbly and energetic as the walk to school gets them exercising and socialising together. It’s also been really good for us as it saves on gas.”
Entry forms need to be returned to Walking School Bus Challenge, ARTA, Private Bag 92 236, Auckland 1142 by 30 September to go into the draw.
