3D light projections ‘Light Diwali’ on Papatoetoe Town Hall lauded as vivid and surreal

An Auckland based team of Visual Effect artists have designed a 3D lights and music projections on Papatoetoe Town Hall as a part of the three-week Auckland Diwali Festival that has received rave reviews from the public.

Created by Auckland-based multi-disciplinary creative studio Creature Post and North Foundation, Light Temple is a 3D wall projection tells the story of Lord Rama, Sita and their entourage returning from war and exile signalling the start of Diwali.

Creative director of the project, Lakshman Anandanayagam says he and his team of VFX artists and designers took ten days to complete the design for projection on to the wall.

Papatoetoe Town Hall is one of the most iconic structures in New Zealand with fantastic architecture and history. The colonial piece of architecture and outlook made the building much more favourable for video mapping for the 3D light projection.

Describing the light projection, Lakshman says that the celebration in lights continues as the building becomes a canvas for intricate Hindu temple carvings.

He adds that the inspirations were behind the beautiful designs created for the projection. The team used rangoli patterns, images of Hindu idols such as Lord Ram, Sita, Ganesh, Lakshmi, Krishna, traditional Diya (lamp) etc. to project under different 3D-motion artworks.

The vivid and standing out colours and the bespoke music sound composition by Previn Naidu brought the element of festivity in the light projection.

"We were thrilled to have the opportunity to create a large-format projection work for such an iconic building; a beautiful natural canvas for video mapping and expected to see beautiful lights and vibrant colours in this celebratory piece.

"It's our privilege to create a show around Diwali for the Indian community in Papatoetoe and the wider community to enjoy," Lakshman told the Indian Weekender.

As a part of the three minute light show, when the light and music reach a crescendo, the building appears to break up into particles of light that slowly drift off into the night.

"The other members of our team who played a large part in creating the Diwali piece were producer Kim Baldwinson, and animator Patrick Killeen," Lakshman said.

The lights were projected by 30K laser projector which is often used for such operations on monuments and festivals.

The Light Temple was first lit last Friday, November 6, and the light show starts just after sunset, around 8:45 p.m. each night and is a three-minute show. This weekend, Friday, November 13 to Sunday, November 15 might be the chance for the public to see the marvellous work of 3D light and projection on the Papatoetoe Town Hall.

The projection on Papatoetoe Town Hall is just one of many landmarks across Tamaki Makaurau that will be bathed in light for the final weekend of Auckland Diwali Festival. Other landmarks include Rangoli-inspired lighting on Te Ara I Whiti – The Lightpath as well as the Sky Tower, Auckland War Memorial Museum and Auckland Viaduct Harbour.

Delivered by Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED), Auckland Diwali Festival has seen more than 100 free activities take place at more than 30 community venues across Auckland since October 27.
