Telangana Association of NZ celebrate Bathukamma festival

The Telangana Association of New Zealand hosted Sadulla Bathukamma festival with community members on Saturday, October 24 at Mt Eden War Memorial Hall.

“We organised the festival to bring the Telangana community to our real traditions, by way of event, decoration, food, songs, dance which was only possible due to untiring support of our executive members and sponsors who supported the event during AL1,” a spokesperson from TANZ said.

The TANZ team says the magnanimity of the event brought back the memories of the yesteryear’s celebrations at their birthplace in Telangana.

“We in New Zealand are blessed by Goddess Bathukamma for having been kept safe during these difficult times worldwide,” the spokesperson added.

Telugu and Telangana Aadapaduchulu showcased colourful Bathukammas made from attractive flowers, assembled at the venue and celebrated the festivity by using native Telangana clapping, circling and singing Bathukamma songs.

A grand procession was also held to welcome the women carrying Gouramma which was later immersed in water.

Hundreds of men, women and children dressed in ethnic Indian wears, jewellery and gifts visited the evening event which was the culmination of the nine days of ritual observance of Navratri.

People who brought Bathukammas to the event were felicitated with prizes, and all visitors were served with the delicacies of Telangana state that reminded them of the taste of festivals from back home in India.

The Telangana Association in the past has organised several community events making the formation of Telangana State, Ramadan, Ganesh Chaturthi, festivals of religious and community significance for the Telanganites and Telugu language speaking members living in New Zealand.
