Kiwi Indian couple in Hamilton welcome triplets during Covid-19 lockdown

A Kiwi Indian couple in Hamilton welcomed triplets to their family on May 1, amid Covid-19 Alert level 3 lockdown in the country.

Vishnu and Akshaya Nair were informed in the early stage of their pregnancy that the couple would be welcoming not one but three babies to their lives, and the couple said they could not be more thrilled.

Despite the country being in lockdown and living the havoc of Covid-19 pandemic, the couple says their journey so far has been nothing but a smooth run, and very comfortable.

“Our midwife gave us good advice right from the start, and we knew what to expect, and even at the hospital, the whole procedure has been very smooth and comforting,” Vishnu told The Indian Weekender.

Akshaya went into labour in the last week of April, and the babies were delivered six weeks before the normal delivery date as they had triplets coming into the world.

Vishnu was by his wife’s side in Waikato Hospital’s labour room, and he adds that it barely took a minute and a half for all three babies to be delivered.

“The first was a baby boy, he came out at in the afternoon 1:38:50 seconds, the baby girl followed at 1:39:10 and third baby girl in another 30 seconds,” Vishnu said.

Vishnu’s mother-in-law travelled from Kerala, India, a few months back to be with her daughter and son-in-law going to help assist the couple steer through this period.

The triplets are in NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit), and Akshaya was discharged after two days, and so far only one parent is allowed to see the baby at a time.

“My wife Akshaya goes to feed them every day, and I have seen my babies only twice in the last almost two weeks,” Vishnu adds.

Vishnu and Akshaya Nair, both software engineers by profession, got married in August 2016 in India and started their new life in New Zealand a few months later that year.

The couple bought their new home just a year and a half ago and planned to enter a new phase of their life by having a baby.

Since the couple had known from the very beginning of their pregnancy that they would have three babies joining their family, they decided their names in advance.

“We have named the baby boy who came out first as Ishan, baby girl Janaki and our third newborn girl Bhanavi,” Vishnu said.

Vishnu further added that neither he nor his wife Akshaya’s side had a history of twins or multiple births.

He added that at the time Akshaya got pregnant, she was 43 kgs only and the doctors were worried if she could go beyond 30 weeks of pregnancy with the triplets.

Akshaya gave birth at 34 weeks via C-section on Friday, May 1.

The couple had planned to buy clothes for the babies closer to the delivery date, but then the country went into Alert Level 4 and 3 lockdowns.

“We do not have the clothes for the baby, except a few we bought online from Farmers, but as we move into Alert Level 2, we will buy most of their stuff as shops open.

“I contacted the retail shop, ‘The Baby Factory’ and I have an appointment on Thursday, May 14 to buy a pram, cot and other necessities for our newborns,” Vishnu added.

The couple said the triplets would be in the hospital for at least five to six weeks before the doctors perform some final checkups and discharge them and will receive a grand welcome home.
