MigHT-I theatre, which presented ‘Mrs Maniben R Patel’ in January is now ready with its next production a thriller. An adaptation of the famous play ‘Twelve Angry Men’ by Reginald Rose, this Hindi production will keep you at the edge of your seats in the two acts aptly titled “Ek Ruka Hua Faisla”. MigHT-I is keen to further its interest in theatre world which is an important part of our culture.
Currently there is a void in terms of Hindi production and MigHT-I feels that there is an opportunity for bringing to the audiences the rich legacy of Hindi Drama in New Zealand. It will also give an opportunity to upcoming artists as well as those who are experience and talent but have left it behind in India when they migrated to New Zealand.
Synopsis of the play: A 19-year old man is on trial for the murder of his father. The defendant has a criminal record (and a lot of circumstantial evidence piled against him). The defendant, if found guilty, would receive a mandatory death penalty.
The jury is sent to a hot, crowded room to deliberate. Before any formal discussion, they cast a vote. Eleven of the jurors vote “guilty.” Only one juror votes “not guilty.” As the tempers flare and the arguments begin, the audience learns about each member of the jury.
What starts off as a minor doubt in one jury member’s mind slowly develops into an intricate and almost perpetually animated discussion about the various possibilities and scenarios where there could be even a shred of divergence from the commonly perceived notions and judgments of the jury members? There is an adjudicator who is supposed to chair the jury and make sure a final decision is reached. But he is also a part of the vote and has to make up his own mind along with making sure the proceedings are done without disruptions. Will the others change their mind? Or will they vote the young man guilty?
A not to be missed play!
Auditions for the play are currently on and will be taking place on Sunday 27th June 2010 at 4.00 pm
