Kiwis stranded in India receive a request for expression of interest for return flight to NZ

Kiwis stranded in India receive a request for expression of interest for return flight to NZ

Emotions are overflowing on social media as stranded Kiwis have started to receive an expression of interest for purchasing tickets on the return charter flights to New Zealand.

The cost of the flight from India to New Zealand (including ground transport in India) has been set up at NZD $5,500 per seat.

According to sources, the government is following the Peru model of repatriation where passengers were charged at $5300

“The New Zealand Government intends to help bring New Zealanders home from India.  We are seeking expressions of interest from those who wish to access flights from India to New Zealand. Please submit an expression of interest for each traveller, and only submit an expression of interest if you are sure you want to return to New Zealand,” an email sent out to stranded passengers read.

The expression of interest will be valid only for 48 hours and stranded Kiwis keen to return home at the earliest are encouraged to make their minds quickly.

The NZ govt has announced on Monday, April 13 that it will bring home New Zealanders from India.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Winston Peters made the announcement saying, “The government is in discussion with airlines and international partners to help those New Zealanders stranded in India return home. This is a seriously complex endeavour due to the current lockdown and a large number of New Zealanders in various locations around India. However, we are making very good progress.

"We are asking all New Zealanders in India to seriously consider taking our government-assisted flights home. There are no guarantees when international commercial flights will return to India and New Zealanders shouldn't be relying on that happening in the short-term."

Govt offers to offer financial assistance

The government has offered to support stranded passengers who might have exhausted their financial resources with an assurance of financial assistance to return home.

If you have exhausted all other options to pay for your flight, you can apply for temporary financial assistance.  This means that the government will initially cover the cost of your ticket, and you undertake to repay the government. We will discuss repayment terms with you within 30 days of your return to New Zealand.

It is a requirement that you explore all avenues for making payment before you apply for temporary financial assistance.  This includes speaking with your bank and seeking any available assistance from family and friends.

A financial assistance application form will be provided by our booking agent to travellers seeking to apply for assistance.
