Grow your veges for free in Roskill

SPROUT, with its commitment to healthy living in the South Asian community, has joined with Wendy James for her dream project of developing a community garden in Winstone Road, Mt. Roskill.  The project is about involving the wider community to transform the “Brown” into the “Green”.

This would be a unique opportunity to socialise and connect with other people while you are learning new gardening skills.  The proposed community garden has 800m2 of barren land with a focus on sustainable living practices and organic gardening. Considering the different cultural food preferences within the community there will be space available to grow what you like.

Why organic food is any better than the usual food

You may be wondering why organic food is any better than the usual food you buy in the supermarket. Well, organic food is more nutritious and is due to the way the soil is managed, and it also has to do with the subsequent processing of food. Many organic foods are more nutritious because they are often a few steps closer to nature than most foods on the supermarket shelf, which are largely aimed at convenience and extended shelf-life. Also organic food tastes better as a lot of standard supermarket food is also jazzed up with flavour enhancers that dull our taste buds to the subtle flavours of real food.

Project Coordinator Nalini adds that organic agriculture is the normal way of farming; food was grown that way for centuries. To do that, people had to understand nature and work with her where possible rather than trying to whip her into submission.
