Noumea, New Caledonia: Ashes believed to be generated from neighbouring Tanna’s Yasur volcano in Vanuatu have caused significant flight disruption in New Caledonia’s domestic Air Calédonie services, especially to the islands of Maré and Lifou, in the Loyalty islands group, the closest to Tanna.
Two flights from Nouméa to Maré and Lifou had to be cancelled on Sunday.
On Monday, other flights on the ATR turbo-propelled planes faced significant delays.
Some Air Calédonie pilots approaching New Caledonia’s Lifou Islands have reported sighting of the could and have preferred to turn back to Nouméa.
Local authorities said a cloud of ashes was hovering at an estimated altitude of two thousand meter in the air space also used to Air Calédonie.
Last Friday, several governments updated their travel advices to citizens intending to travel to Vanuatu.
The Pacific Islands Forum annual leaders meeting is being held in Vanuatu in August.
