Punjab Warriors lift the All Nations Ethnic Cricket Festival in Christchurch

The All Nations Cricket Festival concluded for 2018 with Punjab Warriors becoming the new champions by defeating All Rounders in the finals at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

The tournament was organised to promote and exhibit cultural diversity through cricket by Christchurch Metro Cricket Association and Multicultural Association of New Zealand.

The last day of the tournament held on Sunday, December 16 hosted six matches- with four pool matches, one for the third and fourth spot and the final.

All Rounders scored 152 runs for the loss of four-wicket at the end of 20 overs. R Arora scored 32 runs, O Mahapatra 45 and Joel 30 runs. Inder Grewal from Punjab Warriors led the team to a good start ended the match with his unbeaten 81 runs and Sunny 44 runs.

All-Stars beat Strikers to reserve the third spot in the tournament with scored 155 runs with the loss of nine wickets at the end of 20 wickets. Habib from All-Stars scored 54 runs. Strikers scored 151 runs with the loss of seven wickets at the end of 20 overs with Jalani scoring highest- 48 runs and Jalani and Habib bagging four and two wickets respectively.

In the pool games, Tamil Society lost to Tamil Pasanga with the latter scoring 149 runs for five wickets and T Pasanga 153 for three wickets.

Punjab Warriors beat All-Stars in the pool game with 117/7 and 89 all out for All-Stars.

Cornered Tigers lost to Kings XI Punjab with the final score of 100/5 and 102 for 2. All Rounders beat Strikers with their 203 for five wickets and Strikers 193 for six wickets. Amar from All Rounders scored 95 runs.

Ghulam Gilani Best Bowler of the Tournament

The Top Score Runner of the tournament was given to Inder Grewal from Punjab Warriors, Ghulam Jilani with the Most Wicket Taker.

All-Stars all-rounder Habib Marwat received the Player of the Tournament Award for his exemplary performance in the field through the tournament. Habib scored four half-centuries and took six wickets.

The tournament aimed to unite and promote peace and diversity in the community that was exhibited by the players and teams in the tournament.

“Christchurch Multicultural Council is pleased with the outcomes of this multiethnic cricket tournament as it enabled participation of players from diverse ethnic communities who enjoyed playing with and against each other with zeal and friendship,” President of Christchurch Multicultural Council and one of the organisers of the event, Surinder Tandon told The Indian Weekender.

The tournament was supported by Ara Institute of Canterbury, Little India Merivale, Travel Corner, Ravel Events, Taaftan – Moroccan Grill Restaurant, and Phonefix.
