Cricket lovers of Christchurch are all set to host and experience the second season of Ethnic Cricket Festival after the grand success of the tournament last year.
This year, 11 teams will play for the T20 championship from six teams last year, with Kings XI Punjab team defending its title.
Christchurch Metro Cricket partnered with Christchurch Multicultural Council and delivered the first season in 2017-18 with the aim to promote cricket amongst ethnically diverse communities of ChCh, foster friendship and harmony and to provide opportunities for immigrants to become members of Christchurch Cricket clubs and assist with immersion in local sporting culture.
“We had such fantastic response from the tournament last year that we had 11 teams register for the tournament, which is phenomenal,” President of Christchurch Multicultural Council, Surinder Tandon said.
The Christchurch Multicultural Council was formed in 1989 to promote awareness and acceptance in the multicultural society in ChCh. The community organisation conducts major events and festivals observed the Indian community in ChCh such as Diwali, Holi, Independence Day, etc.
The Christchurch Metro Cricket was formed in 2012 following the amalgamation of the
Canterbury Cricket Christchurch Club and Youth Cricket departments and the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association.
The organisation has been established to provide a strategic focus for club and youth cricket in Christchurch and form a close partnership with the Christchurch Junior Cricket Association to foster cricket in Christchurch. Mike Harvey is the General Manager of CMCA.
The Ara Institute of Canterbury All Nations Cricket Festival will be held on Sundays between November 25 and 16 December at Hagley Park in Christchurch.
