Enthusiastic festival goers brave weather to celebrate Christchurch Diwali

Christchurch on Saturday, November 3 observed the festival of Diwali at the Cathedral Square with over 20,000 people celebrating the festival of lights.

Diwali is one of the biggest festivals of the Indian community celebrated with a great vigour across the globe through various cultural events, special pujas at temples, food and sweets and fireworks.

Christchurch celebrated the big event amidst winds and poor weather, but that did not dampen the spirits of the festival goers to enjoy the food and music at the event. However, the fireworks had to be cancelled due to health and safety issues.

“The event was a big success with such a huge crowd who came to the event even though the weather was poor,” representative of the Christchurch’s Indian Social and Cultural Club told the media.

The performances included classical Indian dances from various schools of Dance from South Island, Bollywood performances, Bhangra from the Punjabi community, acrobatics and other fusion performances.

The high octane event concluded with a medley of Bollywood dance produced by the local Kiwi and Indian talents, but the fireworks were cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

“We are glad families enjoyed the event, and there were lip-smacking snacks and food for the visitors at the event,” the representative from Indian Social and Cultural Club added.
